PALO ALTO, CALIF. (January 27, 1992)-- Legato Systems, Inc. today announced
the Novell NetWare version of its popular Legato NetWorker back up and
recovery software.
The NetWare version, which supports PC LANs running Novell NetWare 3.11,
will be available in March, 1992. The new Legato NetWorker software gives
NetWare users the highest performance and capacity back up and recovery
solution available. Additionally, it is the only product designed to
provide automatic back up and recovery of files across local area networks
and support a heterogeneous mix of computers.
Legato designed NetWorker to accommodate changes in a customer's LAN
environment in two ways. First, NetWorker is the only back up and recovery
software based on a true client/server architecture. As a result,
customers can easily add disparate clients and servers. Secondly,
NetWorker also protects users against change to the NetWare operating
system by supporting Novell's Storage Management Services (SMS). NetWorker
is one of the first products to support SMS for backup activity which
ensures that NetWorker will be compatible with all future versions of
NetWare and that customers will be able to easily upgrade their NetWare
LANs and still use NetWorker to back up and recover files.
NetWorker Scalability
As Novell networks continue to rapidly grow in size, Legato NetWorker
offers high-performance and new capabilities that allow it to scale to
handle a customer's growing network load. During backup operation,
multiple systems across the network process their files and send them to
the NetWorker backup server in parallel. The tape drive is thereby
supplied with a constant stream of files, allowing it to write at
streaming speed, the maximum speed possible.
"From the beginning, we designed NetWorker for the growing data management
requirements of network computing. Top-of-the-line performance and
unlimited capacity are two fundamental requirements. For example, a
typical NetWorker customer today, using a version of NetWorker for Sun
Microsystems servers, backs up 20 gigabytes of files," said Louis Cole,
president and CEO of Legato Systems, Inc. and former executive vice
president of operations at Novell.
Other NetWorker backup features that assist large network environments
include automatic rollover from one tape drive to the next to complete the
backup without administrator intervention, sophisticated multi-level
backup scheduling, and the ability to stagger the backups of the many
systems on the network.
First Client/Server Back Up and Recovery for Heterogeneous Customer
Environments
The client/server architecture is key to NetWorker's ability to support
networkwide, heterogenous operations. The application software is split
between the clients and server which communicate with each other through
remote procedure calls (RPC). Because the client and server software are
distinct, customers can add or change clients and servers without
disrupting the NetWorker system.
Later this year, Legato will release a version of NetWorker that will
support centralized backup across mixed NetWare and UNIX network
environments. At that time, a single backup server will be able to backup
a company's entire heterogeneous network of NetWare, Sun, IBM RS/6000, PC
systems, and other computers.
"Customers are looking for network products that cross their many computing
platforms," said Stephen Basile of ERI, a leading Novell Authorized
Reseller. "NetWorker is the only backup and recovery product that
addresses this important customer need. This, plus NetWorker's performance
and ease of use, is why ERI is recommending NetWorker to our customers."
ERI has signed an agreement to become an Authorized Legato Reseller for
the NetWare version of NetWorker when the product ships in March.
Initially available in the UNIX market, NetWorker is the leading commercial
back up and recovery software product and has been recognized as the best
product in its field by UNIXWORLD. Legato NetWorker is licensed by leading
computer system manufacturers, including Digital Equipment Corporation,
Silicon Graphics,Inc., Sequent Computers, Inc., and Intergraph
Corporation. NetWorker is also available for SPARC systems, IBM RS/6000,
Hewlett-Packard HP-UX, MIPS, and IBM PC-compatible systems.
Configuration, Price and Availability
The NetWare version of Legato NetWorker supports PC LANS running Novell
NetWare 3.11. Using a NetWare 3.11 server equipped with a tape drive as
the NetWorker backup server, an administrator will be able to back up a
complete network of NetWare servers and other computers equipped with the
appropriate Novell SMS software. As Novell releases SMS software support
for new client systems, NetWorker will automatically support those
platforms.
Priced at $2,300, NetWorker provides unlimited NetWare server support and
will be available in March, 1992 through Novell's network of Platinum and
Gold resellers. NetWorker will also be offered in combination with 4mm and
8mm tape drives that give the customer a complete backup and recovery
solution.
